Will your internet stay online during an outage?
Powering your Wi-Fi router is necessary, but it may not be sufficient. There are several powered links between your device and the internet.
Power every device in your local path
A cable connection usually includes a modem and router, sometimes combined in one gateway. Fiber may have a separate optical network terminal (ONT). Mesh nodes, network switches and other required equipment also need power if you depend on them. Count the complete path in your load list.
Provider outages are a separate problem
Your battery cannot repair a damaged cable or restart your provider’s infrastructure. Internet may continue during a local power outage if upstream service remains available, but the battery does not guarantee it. Keep an alternative such as an already-tested mobile hotspot in mind if connectivity is critical.
Do not mistake voice backup for internet backup
Some provider-supplied battery systems are designed to support telephone service only. Verizon states that its Fios voice backup solutions do not power Fios internet or TV. Confirm what the exact backup accessory supports.
Check the experience, not just the lights
Test a controlled switch to backup, confirm that both modem/ONT and router remain powered, and verify an actual internet connection. Follow equipment instructions and avoid altering provider wiring. Account for reboots and reconnect time.
Put your own devices and desired runtime into the planner. Every assumption is adjustable and linked to an explanation.
