FIELD NOTES / HOME-OFFICE RESILIENCE

Build a backup plan for your home office

A useful reserve starts with the work you need to keep doing. Keeping a router, laptop and light online can be a much smaller job than powering a house.

Start with the complete connection

List your router and your modem or fiber ONT separately if you have both. Add your laptop, monitor and any light you need. Leaving the ONT unpowered can give you a working Wi-Fi signal with no internet access.

Measure first, then choose a duration

A power adapter’s wattage is its maximum capability, not necessarily the device’s normal consumption. Use a plug-in energy meter during your typical workload if possible. Decide whether two, four or eight hours would cover the interruptions you care about. An internal laptop battery can reduce what the external battery needs to supply.

Compare energy and output separately

Watt-hours describe stored energy. Watts describe the load the station can power at a given moment. A large battery with inadequate output still will not run the setup. Our planner checks both, using a visible 20% output margin.

Think through the handoff

If even a brief reboot matters, verify UPS operation and switchover compatibility for the exact model and your equipment. Test the setup before relying on it. Keep the manufacturer’s ventilation and installation guidance available.

Put your own devices and desired runtime into the planner. Every assumption is adjustable and linked to an explanation.
